Fire extinguishers have a 20-year lifespan, but must undergo annual maintenance by a company certified in fire extinguisher installation and maintenance. In addition, more extensive maintenance, known as re-typing, is required every five years.

If the extinguisher has not received any maintenance during the first five years, it is recommended to replace it with a new one. Furthermore, since the five-yearly inspection is quite complex, it is often cheaper to purchase a new one than to re-type small extinguishers.
